Hundreds of thousands of people in Catalonia, an autonomous region in Spain that is home to 7.6 million people, are preparing to launch massive rallies calling for independence.

Many of them say they want the region to break away from Spain because Catalonians have a different language and culture.

However, Madrid is pushing against the movement.

Al Jazeera's Emma Hayward reports from Barcelona.
