Flash floods triggered by heavy rains have killed 31 people in northwestern Turkey.

Desperate attempts are being made across northwestern Turkey to rescue people trapped by flooding triggered by two days of torrential rainfall - the worst in 80 years.

At least 31 people are reported to have been killed but officials are saying that the death toll could get higher.

Parts of the country's largest city, Istanbul, are already under water and forced thousands from their homes. The race is now on to try to stop the situation from getting any worse - with more rain forecast for later in the week.
