Turkey lost 2-3 to Germany in the semi-finals of the Euro 2008 football tournament on Wednesday.
Despite the defeat, many Turks saw their nation’s progress through to the semi-final as being almost miraculous.
But the tournament has also raised the issue of their tricky relationship with another European institution, the EU.
