US officials are now saying that it could take months before the final results of Afghanistan's election are known.

It is hardly the kind of success Barack Obama, the US president, would have hoped for as he considers his generals' advice on the way forward.

With the US congress back in session, a political battle appears to be brewing over Washington's Afghan strategy.
