Afghan army takes control of southern city after two deadly attacks.

The city of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan has suffered a second deadly attack, a day after more than 40 people there were killed in a truck bombing.

The Afghan army was deployed to the area to take control of the city.

Taliban fighters battling the Western-backed government continue to have strongholds in Kandahar, the biggest city in southern Afghanistan.

The city was the powerbase of the former Taliban government ousted from power by US-led troops in 2001 and replaced with Karzai's Western-backed administration.

The Taliban struck repeatedly in the run-up to last week's nationwide elections - only the second time in their history that Afghans have voted for a president.
