The city of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan has suffered a second deadly attack, a day after more than 40 people there were killed in a truck bombing. The Afghan army was deployed to the area to take control of the city.
The city was the powerbase of the former Taliban government ousted from power by US-led troops in 2001 and replaced with Karzai's Western-backed administration.
The Taliban struck repeatedly in the run-up to last week's nationwide elections - only the second time in their history that Afghans have voted for a president.
