The Sri Lankan government has declared victory and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have announced they will "silence [their] guns".
Thousands of wounded and hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians are now left to pick up the pieces, following more than 25 years of conflict over a Tamil homeland.
