US and Afghan support for Karzai wanes  
 

The new Obama administration has only been in office for a few weeks, but already there are signs that US policy in Afghanistan is changing in ways that could have implications for the country's president.

Hamid Karzai was once a White House favourite, but his popularity is dwindling both at home and abroad.

It is a situation he will be desperate to reverse ahead of this year's election, as Hamish MacDonald reports.
