Twenty years ago, Soviet troops retreated from Afghanistan.
But with US and Nato-led forces stuck in their own prolonged battle in the country, Russia has offered to open new supply routes to the troops there. Al Jazeera’s Hamish Macdonald travelled to a town once known as “Little Moscow”, Puli-khumri, in the Baghlan province.
