Mohammed Ajmal Amir Iman, the lone surviving suspected gunman involved in last month's attacks on Mumbai, will remain in police custody until January 6, 2009.
Rakesh Maria, the Mumbai police chief in charge of the investigation, said on Wednesday: "We will be producing the charge sheet before the court within the stipulated timeframe (of 90 days)."
Police said they had asked a magistrate to visit the city police headquarters rather than transport Iman to court because of security concerns.
Iman faces a string of charges, including murder and "making war against the country", in connection with the attacks of November 26.
He is accused of being one of 10 heavily-armed attackers who killed 163 people at various locations across India's financial capital - including at two luxury hotels and the main railway station.
Iman, also known as Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, has been identified as a Pakistani national by the Indian authorities.
