Tear gas used near Pakistan mosque
Police use tear gas to disperse crowds at Islamabad's Lal Masjid mosque.
Last Modified: 03 Jul 2007 08:51 GMT

Pakistani security forces have fired tear gas at students from the Red Mosque, or Lal Masjid, in Islamabad.

Eyewitnesses said the action came after the students opened fire on them on Tuesday.

Authorities have been locked in a tense stand-off for months with the student movement which has been behind a self proclaimed anti-vice drive.

But the Pakistani government has hitherto refrained from taking action against the clerics and students from the mosque.
