Jakarta all abuzz about Twitter-usage title

City boasts 30 million Twitter users, narrowly beating Tokyo for lead spot as most active Twitter city in the world.

Jakarta beat Tokyo, London, Sao Paulo and New York to come out first in the world in terms of tweet activity.

Semiocast, a Paris-based research company, also revealed that in 6 months the number of users on the social media site increased by 50 per cent.

Jakarta’s neighbouring city and Indonesia’s second largest metropolitan area, Bandung, ranked sixth.

With the popularity of social networking sites peaking during the Arab uprisings of 2011, Twitter specifically is still growing fast in the region.

Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh ranked number ten on the list and the number of registered users in the kingdom grew by over 93 per cent in six months, reaching 2.9 million users, as Arabic usage of Twitter also increased across the region.

Arabic is now the sixth most popular language on Twitter, used in 2.8 per cent of all public tweets.
