Tiananmen crackdown a 'tragedy'  
  Victor Gao was a translator for Deng Xiaoping, China's paramount leader at the time of the Tiananmen Square protests.

Gao tells Al Jazeera that while the crackdown on the protesters was a "tragedy", the Chinese leadership learnt that political stability was paramount to achieving continued development.
