A judge has suspended the trial of General Efrain Rios Montt, Guatemala's former dictator, for war crimes during his nearly one year rule in 1982.

Survivors have held nightly vigils in the capital, Guatemala City, outside the Supreme Court, demanding that the former president be tried for genocide.

Montt is accused of allowing the military to systematically kill, rape and torture civilians in a campaign to wipe out leftist guerillas. The majority of the victims were indigenous people.

But many believe delving into the past can be complex in a country still struggling to come to terms with its history.

Al Jazeera's Rachel Levin reports from Guatemala City.
