Aid agencies battling to rescue and treat thousands of people affected by a devastating earthquake in Haiti are finding their mission complicated by the scale of the destruction.

Before the disaster struck, over 80 per cent of Haitians relied on funds sent from relatives living abroad.

But now, even that is not possible, as banks and money-wiring services in Haiti have been reduced to ruins.
