A French hostage has reportedly been killed during a failed rescue attempt in Somalia. One French commando was killed and another is missing.

Intelligence agent Denis Allex was captured by al-Shabab fighters in Mogadishu in 2009.

But there is some confusion, as al-Shabab insists the hostage and missing commando are alive and in their custody.

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports.
