Kimberley miners hit by economic slowdown  
 

The South African town of Kimberley is heavily dependent on diamond mining.

Around 40,000 workers will be laid off this year, swallowed up by the global credit crunch.

But trade unions say the financial crisis is being used as an excuse to fire staff and boost profits.
