Election day defeats in NJ, Virginia may show Trump vulnerability

Phil Murphy’s victory over Trump booster Chris Christie in New Jersey and Ralph Northam’s victory over a Trump-backed opponent in Virginia are big wins for Democrats and could be a push back against the president.

There have been elections in several US states, with two new governors elected along with several big city mayors.

Analysts say the results are a test of President Donald Trump’s popularity, and may determine whether the Republicans will hold on to their Senate and House majorities in next year’s midterms.

The new governor of Virginia is Democrat Ralph Northam.

It’s a major victory in a state where Republicans hold a two to one majority in the legislature and a warning to Republicans that the threat from the Democrats could intensify in elections to come.
