One person was killed and another one critically injured following a shooting incident near a mosque in New York City.

According to local reports, the shooting occured on Saturday afternoon near the Al-Furqan Jame Mosque in the New York borough of Queens.

Two men were reportedly walking home from services at the mosque when they were shot by a man, said to be carrying "a large handgun".

Tiffany Phillips, a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department, confirmed that two men were shot on a street in the Ozone Park section of Queens.

One was killed and the second was gravely wounded, but Phillips declined to provide any more information about their identities.

New York's PIX 11 station reported that one of the victims was the head imam. But it was not clear who among the two victims was killed. According to the report, the shooting appeared to be linked to a robbery.

However, the New York Daily News reported that dozens of people gathered at the scene of the shooting said they believed the attack was a "hate crime", and that the victims were targeted by the attacker.
