Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 500th and 501st goals of his career to give Real Madrid a 2-0 win over 10-man Malmo in Group A of the Champions League.

The Swedish side held off Madrid for nearly half an hour before they were caught off guard by a counterattack as Ronaldo gathered an Isco pass and made no mistake alone with goal-keeper Johan Wiland.

Ronaldo got his second goal of the night in the 89th when he tapped in a pass from Lucas Vazquez in front of goal.

He also joined Raul as Real Madrid’s most prolific goalscorer.

Already the top-scorer in the competition’s history, Ronaldo rifled home his 81st and 82nd Champions League goals and took his Real tally to 323 alongside Raul.

Elsewhere, Manchester United recovered from conceding a goal after four minutes to win their first Champions League match of the season when they beat VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Daniel Caligiuri opened the scoring after some poor United defending before Juan Mata equalised with a 34th-minute penalty after Caligiuri handled in his own penalty area.

Chris Smalling stole in to score what proved to be the winner after 53 minutes leaving all four teams in the group on three points after CSKA Moscow beat PSV Eindhoven 3-2 in Moscow in the other game.

Sergio Aguero scored a last-minute penalty to give Manchester City a 2-1 comeback win at Borussia Moenchengladbach and their first three points in Group D.

Gladbach, having waited 37 years for their first home game in Europe’s premier club competition, stunned their big-name opponents with a 54th-minute goal by Lars Stindl.

City drew level with Nicolas Otamendi’s deflected effort in the 65th before launching a late rally in search of a winner and with Argentine striker Aguero scoring from the spot.

The result sees City move up to three points in Group D.
