North Korea botched a rocket launch into space on April 12. Analysts say the failed test was aimed at solidifying the new leader's grip on power.
The launch coincides with the 100th birthday of North Korea’s "Eternal President" Kim Il-sung. The centenary is being celebrated on a grand scale as the communist state honours the national founder by dedicating major building projects and putting on a mass games spectacle.
DPRK recently finished commemorating the death of the "Dear Leader" Kim Jong-il while transitioning rule to his young son Kim Jong-un.
