It has been a week since Typhoon Haiyan hit the central Philippines, killing thousands and devastating communities from Guiuan in the east, where the storm first made landfall, to the major city of Tacloban as well as communities to the west. As government and aid workers grapple to get aid to those in need, 600,000 of whom are said to be homeless, Al Jazeera takes a closer look at the destruction the typhoon has left in its wake.

The response comes as government officials give conflicting estimates of the death toll, which is expected to rise further when the missing are declared dead and remote regions reached.

Given the scale of the disaster, the conflicting figures are not unusual.
