Jose Mourinho's controversial three-year reign at Real Madrid has come to an end by 'mutual consent' [GETTY]

At the weekend Mourinho was given a very mixed reception on his final appearance at the Santiago Bernabeu with the announcement of his name booed by the majority of fans, however he did receive support from the club's ultras [GETTY]

The 50-year-old Mourinho's time in charge of the nine-time European champions Real was littered with high profile bust-ups with the media and many of his star-studded squad [GETTY]

In the latter part of his tenure, Mourinho seemed to be in constant conflict with senior members of his squad. Sergio Ramos and Mesut Ozil were singled out and this season club icon Iker Casillas was dropped in favour of Diego Lopez [GETTY]

However, he did have many successes, guiding Real to the Primera Division last season and winning the club's first Copa del Rey in 2011 [GETTY]

But Mourinho endured a torrid final season in charge of Los Blancos culminating in defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, ensuring that Real ended the season without a major trophy [GETTY]
Ultimately it was his failure to lead Real to their treasured 10th European title that will mark his legacy in the Spanish capital [GETTY]

And so the Special One is returning to England with a four-year contract at Chelsea. Mourinho's previous spell at Chelsea brought the west London team two English Premier League titles, including the club's first for 50 years, the FA Cup and the two League Cups [GETTY]

But the Portuguese coach departed in controversial circumstances amid claims he fell out with Blues owner Roman Abramovich and several players [GETTY]

Chelsea's Frank Lampard is in no doubt who he'd like back at the helm:"He [Mourinho] galvanises people. His own self-confidence reflects back on his teams. He did that to me personally" [GETTY]
