There were fortunately no off-pitch incidents when Balkan rivals Croatia and Serbia met for the first time as independent nations. It was Croatia who won the battle on the pitch with a 2-0 victory. Here veteran striker Ivica Olic (R) celebrates scoring the second.

Denmark rocked the Czech Republic with three second-half goals and a 3-0 victory to secure their first Group B victory and resurrect their qualifying hopes. Italy currently top the group on 10 points, one ahead of Bulgaria - who thrashed Malta 6-0.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud celebrates after scoring for France - who were also 3-0 victors against Georgia. France leapfrogged Spain at the top of Group I, with Spain only managing a 1-1 draw against Finland. France and Spain meet in the big one on Tuesday.

It's all still plain sailing for Germany under the leadership of coach Joachim Loew (pictured). It was yet another 3-0 victory, this time with Germany knocking the goals past Kazakhstan. Germany are in control of Group C, ahead of Sweden.

The flying Dutchman Robin Van Persie was on target for the Netherlands as they defeated Estonia, yes, you've guessed it, 3-0 in Amsterdam. Louis van Gaal's men maintain their 100% record and are sitting pretty at the top of Group D with 15 points from 5 games. Estonia are a little further back in fifth.

European neighbours Hungary and Romania ended their World Cup qualifier even stevens with a 2-2 draw. It was an exciting draw thanks to a last minute strike from Romania's Alexandru Chipciu. Unfortunately, few were there to see it, as the game was played behind closed doors. This was due to Hungary fans chanting anti-Semitic slogans during a friendly at home to Israel last August.

The three men in this picture were all on the scoresheet as England pummelled San Marino 8-0. It was a predictable result with San Marino the lowest ranked side in the FIFA standings. Montenegro remain top of Group H defeating Moldova 1-0.

It wasn't easy for Portugal as they fought from two goals down to claim a 3-3 draw against Israel in Group F. And would it surprise you that a certain player's 'never say die' attitude sparked the revival. Israel and Portugal are eight points from five matches, four behind unbeaten leaders Russia - whose game against Northern Ireland was postponed due to snow.

Portugal got another win under their belts only four days later with a 2-0 win at Azerbaijan. Bruno Alves and Hugo Almeida were left to do the goal-scoring with Ronaldo suspended on the bench.

It was a close encounter between reigning World Champions Spain and group leaders France. It ended up with Spain reclaiming the top spot of Group I after Pedro Rodriguez Ledesma (R) bundled in a goal, and himself, at the Stade de France.
