Russia’s World War II victory parade
Commemorating defeat of Nazi Germany, newly elected Putin attends annual parade, a show of military might.
Published On 9 May 2012
Russian President Vladimir Putin told the annual massive military parade in Moscow’s Red Square that the country will stand up for its policies in the international arena.
Putin’s short speech comes less than a week after the country’s military chief of staff warned that Russia would consider pre-emptive strikes if a dispute with the United States over a Europe-based missile defence system worsens.
The annual parade marks Victory Day, commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in May 1945.
Putin was inaugurated as president for the third time on Sunday.
