An asylum seeker's view

Hashan is a Sri Lankan political refugee.

In Sri Lanka he was an outspoken journalist and human rights activist. He fled his country, fearing he would be persecuted by his government because of his criticism of its human rights record in the 'war' against the Tamil Tiger rebels in the north of the country.

After travelling for more than a month, he ended up in Denmark where he is now stranded, like many others from war-torn countries, in an asylum centre.

He has waited for years for an answer to his asylum case.

Al Jazeera's Awad Joumaa caught up with Hashan at the Sandholm detention centre, just outside the capital Copenhagen.

[After the completion of this report, Hashan was told that his case may now be reviewed.]
