“I am happy because we have qualified,” Egypt assistant coach Shawki Gharib said.

“We played a very good game against a good team.”

Mohamed Shawky got the game’s first chance in the eighth minute when he sent a thumping shot from 15 metres that was saved by Angola goalkeeper Lama.

Emad Motaeb’s effort missed target in the 10th after Zaki’s shot deflected off Angola defender Marco Airosa.

Angola began its search for another equaliser goal in the 46th.

Manucho and Flavio combined to create Angola’s first scoring opportunity in the second half but the Manchester United recruit shot wide from within the area.

Manucho was then denied by El-Hadary from close range in the 60th following a one-two with Flavio. Manucho routinely troubled the Egyptian defence.

Lama kept Angola in the game with an acrobatic save to deny Motaeb from the edge of the area in the 66th.

“We are on a rise,” Angola coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves said. “Africa can count on us.”

Egypt coach Hassan Shehata benched Mohamed Zidan and picked Abd Rabou, Motaeb and Zaki up front.

Mohamed Aboutreika starred in the Egyptian midfield in place of experienced captain Ahmed Hassan. Hassan replaced Zaki in the 70th.

Egypt won Group C with seven points to reach the last eight while Angola finished second in Group D.

Angola, which is to host the next tournament in 2010, was making its first appearance in the last eight.
