One US soldier dead in Afghanistan

US soldier and three Afghan fighters are dead in latest ambush.

A firefight with unknown attackers in southeast Afghanistan has left one US soldier dead and five others wounded, the US military said in a statement on Friday. Three Afghan militiamen were also killed and one wounded in the battle.

According to the statement, American forces were attacked by “approximately 20 enemy personnel” while investigating a report of suspicious activity. When reinforcements arrived, the attackers fled across the border into Pakistan.

This was the third US soldier to be killed in Afghanistan in the past four weeks. On 29 March, two US troops were killed in an ambush in southern Helmand province.

There are currently more than 10,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan as part of the US-led force hunting down Taliban and Al-Qaida fighters in Afghanistan.
