Germany: parties agree to form coalition government

Germany's two main parties have finally struck a deal to form a coalition, more than four months after the election.

Germany's Social Democrats originally said they would not prop up another government under Chancellor Angela Merkel.

But they have now agreed that they will go into another coalition with the conservatives if party members approve.

The Social Democrats would keep control of the foreign ministry and take over the post of finance minister if the coalition forms.
