Hamas hands over Gaza border crossings to Palestinian Authority

Hamas surrendered its control of the checkpoints following a deal with the PA-ruled Fatah political party, reached in the latest round of Egypt-brokered reconciliation talks in Cairo on October 12.

Hamas has handed over administrative control of five border crossings in Gaza to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs the occupied West Bank.

Hamas surrendered its control of the checkpoints following a deal with the PA-ruled Fatah political party, reached in the latest round of Egypt-brokered reconciliation talks in Cairo on October 12.

However, the handover does not mean that the people of Gaza will be able to move freely through border crossings. They will still need to apply for an Israeli travel permit.

Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports from the Erez crossing into Gaza.
